COMMON FAILURES

Gears that crunch

When the gear crunches (cold, in first, in reverse) and whether the engine still idles in neutral help separate the causes.

Possible causes

01

Worn synchronizers

Synchronizers match the gear before it engages. When worn, the teeth meet and the gear crunches, often in first or in reverse.

02

Clutch not fully disengaging

If the clutch does not fully disengage, the gear resists and crunches. A low fluid level or air in the circuit can be the cause.

03

Gearbox oil

Old oil or a low level reduces protection of the gears. The noise becomes clearer while the gearbox is cold.

A gear cannot be engaged at all, or the gearbox goes into limp mode: have the vehicle stopped rather than insisting.
